Alternative Libraries

Many people are intimidated by libraries because of their reputation of being stuffy, quiet, and only a place where studious "nerds" go. Because of this stereotype, many Alternative libraries have formed, trying to attract patrons who may not have entered a library. I think this idea is genius! I know that every person has different learning preferences and classic libraries may not serve certain people. Even allowing drinks in the library (Temecula Public allows it), is new and unlibrarish. Check out (no pun intended) the link below for an article from the UK regarding this issue.

It seems like every library is trying to be "alternative" lately. Many are trying to switch over to the "Marketplace" plan where they are more like a bookstore than a library. And while better access to technology, faceout placement of books, and being able to drink my frappacinno while browsing are nice.....I admit I miss the QUIET that used to be an intregal part of the library. Everything else in life is so noisy, that the silence of the library was a bit of a refuge. (re-reads comment) Wow...at some point I have turned into my parents...you must excuse me while I now go yell at kids to stay off my lawn ;-)

That's cool. I didn't know that Temecula Public allowed drinks inside. I'm going to check that out next time I'm there. =)
